JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Folks across Pennsylvania caught a glimpse of a rare colorful spectacle in the sky Wednesday – a "fire rainbow." The textbook name for a "fire rainbow" is circumhorizontal arc, the colors in the sky have nothing to do with fire. This rare view happens when sunlight hits thin, wispy white clouds at just the right angle. In order for this to happen, the sun has to be high in the sky, which happens midday.
ALTOONA, Pa. - The 29th Compressed Natural Gas fueling station in the state opened in Altoona Monday. The new Fifth Avenue location is part of the Public Private Partnership. “We are making steady progress towards our goal of having CNG fueling stations across Pennsylvania,” Gov. Tom Wolf said. “The benefits include more efficiency, cleaner burning fuels and lower fuel costs for our transit agencies.” With the introduction of the Altoona station, AMTRAN-Altoona will convert 28 buses to CNG.
Indiana County, PA (WJAC) — State police in Indiana County have filed charges against a Graceton woman who is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from an area veterinary practice where she was formerly employed. Troopers say in February, the owner of Frazer Veterinary Hospital claimed that one of his former employees had allegedly stolen money from his practice. Upon further investigation, police say the former employee was identified as 46-year-old Michelle Bowman.
According to Somerset County dispatch, the Windber Church of the Nazarene caught fire early Sunday morning. The church, located at the corner of Graham Ave. and 9th St., lost a portion of its roof in the fire. Dispatch reported that one person had been taken to the hospital and the Fire Marshall had been contacted to investigate. Church Board Member Carol Hoover said the Fire Marshall told them that a lightning strike had started the fire and it is unclear whether the building is a total loss.
Cambria County, PA — Chief B.J. Newman, with the West Hills Regional Police Department says the idea of providing more tasers to his officers was proposed by the previous chief. He says he is glad to see it come to fruition, through state representative Frank Burns, of the 72nd District. "Any chance we can get, to upgrade our toolbox, more available to help us to do our job better is highly appreciated.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — The Robert Morris University hockey team paid a visit to the Johnstown fire department on Friday. Firefighters showed them around and gave the team a glimpse of what they do every day. Robert Morris plays at the War Memorial Saturday against Ontario Tech. The team's assistant coach says road trips can provide the team with a bonding experience that can help them later in the season.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WJAC) — Penn State researchers are urging hunters to be careful as recent studies suggest that white-tailed deer could be a reservoir for the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19. Penn State researchers reference a study out of Iowa that found more than 80% of the white-tailed deer sampled in different parts of the state between Dec. 2020 and Jan. 2021 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. They say the percentage of SARS-CoV-2 positive deer increased throughout the study, with 33% of all deer testing positive.
MACOMB, Ill. (KHQA) — After six years of development, a life-size Monopoly board was finally revealed this week in an Illinois city. Hundreds gathered on the square to celebrate the opening of "Macombopoly," a board game set up around Macomb Square. Individuals can scan a QR code to play the game on their phone. Participants can also answer trivia questions and possibly win coupons to local businesses. The board features statues of the game pieces and the Macomb-born creator, Lizzie Magie.
